That is why I take my good time to write this article on how to check site ranking position and performance on Google search console? That means will take in details how to monitor your site's performance on Google search console.

If you have a website or blog it is important that you monitor its performance on the Google Search Console (Formally Google webmaster tool). Although there are many other free and paid rank checkers which are majority paid services, that you may use to check how your site is performing.

But to hear directly from Google's mouth is the matter for me. Google search console is the primary tool for monitoring my performance on the SERP. Any other rank checker is secondary.

Fortunately, Google (the most popular Search Engine) will tell you every issue good or bad with your site, affecting it's performance on it's Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). You can also click the queries to see if your website or web page is ranking for the exact keywords intended or not.

The goal of average Bloggers and Brands is to see their pages at the top of the SERP. That is why everyone battle to write SEO friendly pages and to study what are Search Engine Optimization Basics so as to rank higher on the SERPs.

Therefore, Google wants to help everyone in reaching this goal by telling you why it ranks or can't rank your pages at the top of SERP...and it's free!

Now I will tell you how to check site ranking position and performance on Google search console step by step.

In this article most of the times when I say "report" I am simply referring to Clicks, impressions, CTR, average position and they have the following meaning (from support.google.com).

Clicks: this is the total visits or clicks to a particular website or page.
Impressions: this is the total number of times that a page is listed for a query in the SERP.
CTR: Click Through Rate, it is the calculation of the total clicks for a page divided by it's total impressions.
 Position: this is the average position of your website or page on the SERP.

Abbreviations

GSC = Google Search Console
SERP = Search Engine Result Page
SEO = Search Engine Optimization
CTR = Click Through Rate
URL = Uniform Resource Locator, Universal Resource Locator.

How to use the performance dashboard to check site ranking position and performance on Google search console.

To check your performance login to your GSC dashboard and on the left menu click "performance."
The performance dashboard will appear where it shows information on CLICKS, CTR, IMPRESSIONS and AVERAGE POSITION and below the "reports" is the filter table. The filter table that is where you filter your desired results. Explained in screenshot below.

In this performance dashboard you get all the reports you want concerning your site's ranking on Google search console. But the report is available only for indexed pages. To confirm if your page is indexed go to "URL inspector" on the left menu. Then copy and paste your URL there, if something like the screenshot below appear then your page is indexed.

But when it says: "URL is not on Google" and if you have submitted your sitemap, may be Google have not yet crawled your page and index it. Give it a little more time. Or you may request indexing beside the "URL is not on Google" at the right end side and wait for sometime for Google to crawl and index your page. The crawling and indexing my take a day or two, three or anytime longer.

But if you have already requested indexing repeating the request will not change the result. Just be patient, it is usual some times to take longer time than we expected but for sure Google will crawl your page anytime soon.

To check your crawling issues go to "coverage" on the left menu.

Now on the performance dashboard, you filter your information on the down and the results will show at the top. You can filter your reports by: queries, pages, countries, devices and search appearance and there reports will show just above the filter.

On the GSC when you click "performance" on the left menu the results that appears on the performance dashboard is your site's report.
But if you want to be sure you can copy and paste your site's URL on the URL bar on the first picture above. But if you can't see the URL bar click the "+ new" which will be there for sure then paste your URL.

The "reports" shown is that of your entire side. You can get more detailed reports by using the filter.

Check top ranking pages

Use the filter table click "pages" the list of your top ranking pages will appear ranking from the highest to lowest.

But should make sure that it is your site's URL on the URL bar not page URL.

Check page ranking performance

To check your page ranking position and performance.

Select a page from the ranking pages list or copy and paste the page URL on the URL bar.

The page performance and position will show on the "reports."

Use the filter to also filter more reports.

Check your ranking for particular query/keyword

To check what queries you rank for, for particular page, paste the page URL on the URL bar.

Now on the filter table click "queries" the list of the keywords your page rank for will appear.

Click each query/keyword to see how you rank for it (the reports: clicks, impressions, CTR, average position).

Check ranking by countries

Click countries on the filter table and select the particular country.

The reports for that country will appear.

You can click devices to see devices used, click queries to see queries your page rank for in the country etc.

Check ranking by device

To check ranking by device simply click device on the filter

The list of the devices will appear. This will be: desktop, mobile or tablet.

Then the reports for that particular device will be generated.

Check ranking by date range

At the top of the "reports" and behind the URL bar you get the option for date range.

Select a particular date range and the reports will show for that particular period.

This means you can compare your site or pages performance for the past few months or weeks and see if your site and pages are improving or not.

Check ranking by search type

If you want to check ranking maybe for other types of contents. Like: videos, images.

Simply use the "search type" above the reports and behind the "date"

Select your search type by: web, videos or images and the reports will be generated.

How to check if you are ranking for the right keywords

Must a times writer's do a keyword research. So as to choose the easier keyword to rank for among competitors. If we didn't place the keywords rightly Google may rank the content for a different keyword instead making it harder to rank higher.

Therefore, Google search console will tell you what keywords your page is ranking for and where is it's position in the SERP for that keyword. Therefore to confirm whether your page is ranking for the right keywords.

Go to the search console dashboard in the performance. Copy and paste the URL for the page you want to check. Then click queries the list of the keywords your page is ranking for will appear.

Click each keyword to see how you are ranking for it.
